  • What can I do to support my child's attendance?

Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting good attendance.

Regular attendance helps children grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. When children miss school, they miss valuable learning, friendships, and opportunities to thrive.

School absence disrupts the education of the individual pupil and the whole class. Are you aware that children who do not attend regularly:

    • Do not achieve well in exams

    • Find it difficult to maintain friendships

    • Are more likely to become involved in crime

    • Miss out on opportunities in further education and the world of work?

    Did you know?

90% attendance = half a day missed every week, which adds up to significant lost learning over time.

We encourage parents to only keep children at home when they are genuinely too unwell to attend, and arrange appointments or holidays outside the school day whenever possible. If you are experiencing difficulties, we encourage you to talk to us—we are here to help.

We understand that some children, including those with long‑term medical needs, mental health challenges, or SEND, may face additional barriers. We work compassionately with families to provide tailored support.

    Authorised and Unauthorised Absence

Absences can only be authorised by the school.

The school will not authorise absences for birthdays, shopping, haircuts, family illness, or term‑time holidays. [This list is not extensive.]

We suggest that medical or dental appointments be arranged outside school hours whenever possible. If an appointment must take place during the day, please ensure your child attends school before or after the appointment and provide appointment evidence.

If a pupil's school attendance is of concern, we may request medical evidence for any absences recorded.

    Attendance Processes

Each term we analyse school attendance for every child. You will receive an email to share your child's attendance figure. If attendance drops below 90%, we will contact you so we can meet to work together to improve it. Our aim is always the same: the very best for your child.
