At St John’s Meads, we believe every child deserves a curriculum that empowers them to become independent, confident designers and makers who reflect our values of love, independence, generosity honesty, and teamwork [LIGHT].

Our Design & Technology curriculum nurtures each child’s God-given potential by developing their imagination, creativity and problem-solving skills. Through purposeful design and hands-on making, children learn how the ‘made world works’ and how they themselves can shape it.

Aligned with the National Curriculum and closely linked to Maths, Science, Art and Computing, our D&T education builds technological understanding and practical capability. Lessons are carefully scaffolded, with clear modelling of vocabulary, techniques and safe use of tools. Pupils explore and experiment with a wide range of materials, components and mechanisms, deepening their understanding of how products function and are manufactured.

Real-world contexts make learning meaningful: children research existing products, explore how things work, and use the internet to gather ideas and inspiration. They design, draw, model and make with increasing precision, applying knowledge from across the curriculum. Cooking and nutrition are taught as essential life skills, helping pupils understand how to prepare food safely and purposefully.

Evaluation is embedded throughout the design cycle. Children reflect on what they like, what they would improve, and how their product meets the design criteria—developing a mindset of continuous improvement that extends far beyond primary school.

By engaging pupils in creative, practical and reflective learning, St John’s Meads enables children to take pride in producing high-quality outcomes and to shine as lights in their community—curious, capable and ready to contribute thoughtfully to the world around them.
