At St John's Meads, our art curriculum is rooted in the belief that creativity flourishes through exploration, resilience, and reflection. From the earliest years, children are encouraged to embrace mistakes as part of the learning journey, building the confidence to overcome challenges and express themselves freely. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and decide how to use colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

We offer a rich and varied programme that spans classical, traditional, modern, and contemporary art styles. This enables pupils to understand how art and design reflect and shape our history, and how they contribute to the culture, creativity, and economic vitality of our nation. We aim to foster an appreciation that art is everywhere—not just in galleries and museums, but in the everyday beauty of the world around us.

Our curriculum is intentionally diverse and inclusive, featuring artists of different genders, nationalities, and ethnic backgrounds. This ensures that every child sees themselves reflected in the creative world and understands the global nature of artistic expression. We also highlight the creative arts as a thriving industry, inspiring pupils to consider future careers in design, illustration, architecture, fashion, and beyond.

Self-expression, curiosity, and individuality are at the heart of our ethos. Pupils are given regular opportunities to explore their creative talents in our dedicated art room, through hands-on projects, collaborative work, and personal interpretation. We actively engage with visiting artists, competitions, and exhibitions to enrich the learning experience and celebrate our students’ achievements.

Art at St John's Meads is not just a subject — it’s a celebration of imagination, identity, and possibility.
