  • PE and Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of physical education (PE), sport and physical activity for all pupils.

At St John's Meads, we are committed to helping every child develop a love of physical activity and an understanding of the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. We use this funding to:

    • Enhance the quality of PE teaching through staff training and specialist support.
    • Increase participation in regular physical activity throughout the school day.
    • Provide a wider range of sports and physical activities for pupils.
    • Offer opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
    • Promote positive physical and mental wellbeing for all children.
    • Raise pupils' confidence, enjoyment and engagement in sport and physical activity.

Our aim is to provide high-quality PE and sporting opportunities that inspire pupils to be active, build confidence, develop teamwork and establish lifelong healthy habits.

    Accountability

Schools are required to publish details of how the PE and Sport Premium is spent and the impact it has on pupils. Please find below our PE and Sport Premium reports, action plans and swimming attainment information.

    Year 6 Swimming Competency

Swimming is an important life skill, particularly for children living near the coast. At St John's Meads, we are committed to ensuring that pupils develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to stay safe in and around water.

As we do not have access to an on-site pool, our Year 5 pupils attend a block of swimming lessons at a local leisure centre. These lessons focus on developing swimming proficiency, water safety and self-rescue skills.

The table below shows the percentage of our Year 6 pupils who met the national curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety by the end of Key Stage 2.

Meeting national curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety
    2025-2026
What percentage of our Year 6 cohort swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres? 85%

What percentage of our Year 6 cohort use a range of strokes effectively?

[For example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

    76%
What percentage of our Year 6 cohort perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations? 85%
Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. Have you used it in this way? No
